Last year I purchased a Gruv Gear 2EB Bass Kapsule. It claims to be a hybrid of a soft case and a flight or hard case. So I thought what better way to test this claim by taking it on a world tour (with Bat Out Of Hell The Musical) through the UK, Germany, New Zealand, Australia and then back to London to see if it can bring my Sadowsky bass guitar home in one piece. Capitals cool man!
Regarding the moving the air and capturing that nuance that a modeler can't get. If you can notice a difference between the two in a blind test, you might have something there. I'm skeptical if you can tell and even more skeptical when combined with all the other instruments/vocals on the recoding
There is nothing quite like some really heavy strings on bass, I’ve got a set of DR ddt 135-55 strings and they sound awesome, super fast punchy feel with a full bottom and after adjusting the truss rod I’ve got super low action so I don’t wear out my left hand, I do the same thing to guitars so they don’t feel like a toy lol
no. they are not. silly.
Ironically as a non bass player I always assumed that arm rotation was why it was called "Slap" Bass anyway lol. Because it looks like your slapping the guitar.
I like having options. Both of my basses have switchable active/passive modes.
Meanwhile, I think most 5-string basses have a wider neck than my 4-string. I wanna get a 5-string now though.
To me the most important difference is that you have an extra string to mute (against resonating). String damper at the end of the neck does assist, but only partly. Resting your dumb on it is convenient, but then still the E to mute. Resting on the E and with your dumb damping the B at the same time is also an option. Nevertheless, it is more to take care of. For having a decent sound of the B-string a certain stiffness af te neck is needed. However, I play a 5-string fretless, and that one gives more harmonics on the lowest string than a fretted one. The B-string is not used often, but sometimes it is fine to have it. Low D is well usable as a main note. Low B or C sometimes for intermediate notes (like a A - low C - Low D - low E sequence). Must say that it took me several weeks to get used to 5 strings. Somehow my right hand 'counts' downwards, and my left hand upwards. So, sometimes confusions between the hands.
If you get both of them your all set. Which one I use depends on the song. I like the growl, punch, mids, and neck of the P-Bass. Rock 'n Roll! I like the J-Bass for its round, taught sound. Don't bye new ones unless you got lots of bucks for custom shop models. New American standards suck. You can get great used ones from 1995-2000 for half the price that kick ass. Alder wood for me. I don't like ash. They sound dead and have less mids. Now If I could only have one it would be the P-Bass. It's #1 for a reason. I just love it.
Love the growl, punch, and neck of a P bass. It's #1. Alder wood only. Rock 'n Roll! Ash ones don't breathe. Less mids. They might be good for something. Not for me.
Precision Bass is Perfect.
Great review. I have the single version of this and love it. With regards to the damage on the casters Gruv Gear does recommend that the they are removed before going in an aircraft hold. I have a Player series J Bass which I used to transport in a practically blast proof metal flight case. The combined weight of this was 24kg and was a problem. When my Kapsule finally arrived this saved me almost 8kg. This include packing some cloths in the soft section. My bass has an East Retro pre amp which has 3 double stacked pots. These did get suffer minor damage which was very easy to fix. I now put a couple of kids very oversized Lego type bricks over the pots which protects them very well. I’ve tried to attach a picture but UA-cam wont allow me to.
The answer to the unbalance in output from the low strings to the high is because of string tension. That can be fixed by using a multiscale bass (fanned frets)
Uou missed mentioning the built in effects and the switch above the bass in.
I'm 67 and I still load out my old 2 x15 cabinet and Ampeg head. I just really gotta have that sound. But it ain't gettin' any easier, I freely admit.

Hi, A question, So this pedal effect alows a sound since overdrive, to distortion to fuzz?
DI's and a monitor mixer who has no taste and will not put enough bass in the monitor mix can create huge problems with the rest of the band not being to lock in properly. Drummers need to hear plenty of bass. I've played with too many sound guys who don't like bass and screw up things for everyone.
0:41 - 1:25 was exceptional explanation g roles within the band!! Great stuff (5yrs late my bad😅)
Yeah kinda wish the top was the same as the bottom with hard plastic.

I look at my on stage amp at my stage monitor. I like to feel it, and dial in what I'm hearing in the live mix. I hate IEM's, I generally haven't liked anything in my ears, and am paying for it after 30 years of playing. Just stuck in my ways. Sansamp bass di into a fender rumble is really all I need.
Guitar amps will die before bass anps
Great video. Actually taught me where other videos assume you already know the entire fretboard. Thank you for taking the time to make this simple to understand. Gives me something to practice regularly.
Nice. Just borrowed my BIL bass. I have some guitar playing experience so I understand some scales. Looking to take my shitty guitar skills to bass. Starting basically from scratch. Now I have a goal to look forward to. THANKS!!
The last one is very impressive but also very useless in real life
To save anyone else the trouble, this is essentially an advertisement for $4000 in-ear monitors. No real advice or input on alternatives to bass amps...
Great short. It would be great for you to do a video on this. I’ve gone to see a hand specialist and it wasn’t helpful at all.
I used to carry an SVT everywhere i played, not anymore. They sit in the basement. I will never give up my B15. Lately i have been using a Mesa WD800 and I'm going to grab 4 single ultralight Mesa 12's. Or maybe some Barefaced. I need to feel the vibes from my amp onstage or anytime.
people have been lamenting the death of the amplifier since switch mode psu came in 30 years ago. also multiband compression has changed the music we listen to, not that anyone has noticed that. the question you should ask is, what innovation has there been in amplifiers? new sound? No? None the amplifier industry still squeezes out sausages that have to be eaten, now they are lighter and smaller with the same flavour.
thanks for the informative video. i'm a new bassist who has been learning and a drummer gave me hell for not being in sync with him. this helped.
A classic Bass rig : head +cabinet "feels" real in a live situation...and is more dificult to be robbed vs a pedalboard + di boxes😂
Great video!
Terrible tutorial video your not teaching us nothing going to fast.
merci pour tes bon conseils ...
Amp modelling uses Impulse Responses which are indistinguishable from that real amp in that room. IR quality varies drastically, so finding a good one is challenging. But when you have it, your tone is perfect every time.
it is frequencywise but the 3D feel of the air movement is missing. However that's extremely subtle and could even get lost in a busy mix.
It seems to me that pretty much everyone recordring bass for metal music these days are just using DIs, and that's a shame cause of the lack of uniqueness.
Interesting video, I think the basics for Marcus Miller slap tone are: Jazz bass with maple neck and maple fretboard, 70's style pick-up position, stainless steel strings, scooped EQ (bass boost, mids cut and treble boost), softer attack with use of compressor and clean your fretboard regularly. With this you will have a very close approach of Miller's slap sound. I f you want as close to 100% then use the same Sadowsky pre-amp (or Baartolini??) he's currently using.
Totally agree with you! I have to be honest, this was a tough video to make. On the one hand, there are certain things that are crucial like the maple neck, 70’s pick-up position etc. But on the other, I wanted to give tips that anyone with any bass could follow. I always think it sucks a little when the first tip of a video implies “unless you spend X-thousand dollars on new gear you can’t do this” but I see what you’re saying. It still makes a difference!
"Mwah' is also enhanced by lowering the action.
Hello. I think you're wrong. Almost all professional bassists use their amplifiers on stage. I am a bassist and I wouldn't change the feeling of your own amplifier behind your back for anything. Not even close to personal monitoring. Greetings!
All though I am a amp guy myself - amps feel best imo, looks cool and arent that bulky if you dont want it to be anymore. My impression from norwegian proffesional bass players is that IEM are on its way to taking over. I definetly see why, its seems easier to sound good and makes the job for the sound engineer so much easier. But for me music playing dont have to be all about practicality, when Metallica plays with in ears it just seems wrong.
Those drum grooves r sa. Cool vid. Thanks man🤙
95-35.... can't stop playing
Nope, lost. Now I'll try Josh.
I got my first p bass thanks to Steve Harris from iron maiden and haven't looked back since
Considering to go the in-ear route. Logistics are a pain for cabinets, and with the right tools you can get in-ears to work for small venues. I am fed up with places without proper monitors where everybody just dials to 11 in order to hear themselves.
It’s been a game changer for me for sure. If you’re in the right type of gigs, or if you just prefer IEM’s, I’d say they’re a solid investment!
@@OnlineBassGuitar1 you forgot to add that for some players, it can even prevent becoming dependent of a car for the ride (if you are within areas with suitable public services)
@@luisborralho4298 great point!
